The Certamen

Since 2014 · Paseo Marítimo, Estepona

The ham came down to the sea in 2014. And stayed.

11th edition · August 2026View on Instagram (opens in a new tab)

The idea came from José María Téllez, “Popi”, who has carved ham in Estepona since the age of thirteen. After the final of a carving contest, a friend urged him to set up something that would bring more people to the town. He put it to the mayor, and in August 2014 fifty-five companies took over the seafront promenade for four days.

Today it runs for ten nights, with over a kilometre of exhibitors, carvers working in full view and a free concert every night at half past eleven. The Town Council’s figures for 2022, 2023 and 2026 each exceed half a million visits. Entry is free, every plate of ham costs five euros, and the night ends with live music beside the sea.

How the English-language press tells it

The Costa del Sol reads about the Certamen in its own language.

  • Euro Weekly News wrote in 2024 that Estepona was once again the “world capital of Iberian ham”, and in 2023 introduced Popi as the carver who dreamed of putting Estepona and the art of carving on the global culinary map.
  • The Olive Press calls it the World Ham Contest: in 2022 it reported the return after a two-year hiatus, and in 2023 an edition with two hundred carvers.
  • andalucia.org, the Junta’s official tourism portal, lists it as the World Popi Ham Contest, and Visit-Andalucía describes it as the World Jamón Competition.
  • In its 2026 report, the organisers highlighted the presence of content creators from Spain and abroad.

Another question?

  • Yes. It is a flat promenade with no steps, you come and go as you please and the atmosphere is family-friendly. With small children, most people come at dinner time, before the concert. La Rada beach has assisted bathing in season.

  • Exhibitors come from the main Iberian ham regions, such as Los Pedroches, Guijuelo, Jabugo and Extremadura, alongside Sabor a Málaga producers. The Junta de Andalucía’s file puts visitors from outside Estepona at between 30 and 40 %, and the Costa del Sol’s English-language press covers it every August.
